Day 5 – Nuremberg Food Tour and Rothenberg

This morning we had to have our luggage ready at 7:15. We just left it in the room and it was magically transported!

We left our bottles out every day in case they wanted to recycle them, and they kept never disappearing! We had so many bottles!

We had one last breakfast and boarded our bus to Nuremberg. As we were pulling out, who walked by but Michael! He waved to all of us one last time and we were off!

We played games on the bus today. For one of them it was the front of the bus vs. the back of the bus. We played a trivia game. We won! The last question was a German translation of one of the phrases we had learned the day before. I knew it! Woot!

They also gave us cookies! Cookies we couldn’t eat. Rude.

These were cookies that Germans give someone special to save.

No worries though! We did have the snack basket.

Stephen picked an apple! Who picks an apple from the glorious snack basket?

We made it to Nuremberg!

We started in the courtroom where the Nuremberg trials were held. The Nuremberg trials were held to try the top surviving Nazis for crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The courtroom:

Then we moved on to a walking culinary tour of Nuremberg! A culinary tour? That sounds good to me!

Our first food was pretzels! Buttered Pretzels! My word they were amazing!

I never add butter to anything! I don’t usually care if it’s there or not. These pretzels may have changed my mind!

If you spin the ring on this statue and made a wish, it was supposed to come true!

Nuremberg is a beautiful little town!

We stopped for lots of pictures, which I greatly appreciate about ABD!

The paddle of power!

We walked into the bunker where they hid valuable art during the war. The blissfully air conditioned bunker. Have I mentioned how hot it was?

Here we are! Sweating our faces off…

Alica and Veronica from ABD!

Our next stop was beer!

Or Coke as the case may be!

Lunch was sausages! Nuremberg sausages. Which ended up being my favorite sausage we had all week!

And believe me, we had a LOT of sausage to compare it to.

Next we went to a bakery for cookies! That we could eat!

We had some free time after the tour, so the guide gave us some suggestions for things to do and we struck out.

We started in a beautiful church.

Then we walked through a shopping area.

So pretty!

Another church!

We ended up on a cute little street we’d seen on the way in.

After that we all piled back in the bus and headed to our destination for the next two nights – Rothenberg!

I remember Rothenberg from when I was young! I was super excited!

On the way, Alica and Melanie gave us a little warning. Rothenberg is a beautiful, quaint little town, encircled fully by a city wall. That means it is beautiful – but old. Our hotel was in the best location, right in the middle of town! But it had no air conditioning.

Oy. Had I mentioned how hot it was?

We were not prepared for these temperatures. When we packed, it was going to be high 80’s at the beginning of the week, cooling off by the end. Well the forecast had changed. It was only getting hotter. We had been high 80’s low 90’s so far, and the rest of the week was mid to high 90’s!
I was dying. I packed mostly long sleeve shirts and shorts and I was fully unprepared for these record high temperatures.

And now we had a hotel with no air conditioning. This would be interesting!

We entered the town through a tunnel. Everyone was so amazed by how pretty it was but Alica and Melanie promised it would get even better! It did!

Getting our giant bus down these tiny streets was innnnteresting.  I would not have wanted to be the driver!

We were staying at the Hotel Eisenhut!

We were right next to Kathe Wohlfahrt.  Which was a crazy big Christmas store!

Sweet mercy it was hot.

But we were right next to the center of town!

Our room was cute! I don’t know if I took any pictures! Such a fail!

And it was hotttttt…

But it had a great view from our window!

We cranked up the fan and took a short nap. Then we headed out for a walk and some dinner!

There’s the famous Rothenberg scene you see in pictures down there!

Right around the corner from out hotel!

We also passed several places selling Schneeballs. It was basically pie crust dipped in powdered sugar and rolled up in balls.

Stephen was not impressed with the crooked house. He insisted it was not very crooked, and I should not be calling it the crooked house. I showed him on the internets how I was not the only one. But it’s the house to the right of the tower!

We walked to the wall to circle the city.

Outside the wall:

The wall!

The wall had great views!

We were getting hungry at that point, so we cut across the city.

We found dinner!

Yes, we had ice cream for dinner and it was delicious.

Then we went back to the hotel. It was almost time for our Night Watchman Tour!

There was a Night Watchman down there!

While we were sitting on the bench outside the hotel, enjoying the slight breeze, a Night Watchman passed leading a giant pack of people!

It was getting pretty out!

Then it was time! Our group had our own private tour! Woot!

We each had time to take a picture with the Night Watchman himself!

Our guides noticed this was happening and cracked up.  Then they took a picture of us!

Then we were off!

We watched the clock strike and the mechanics that followed.

The city was beautiful at night!

We ended at our hotel where the Night Watchman gave us our next pin!

The Romantic Road pin!

Then my friend Melissa and I walked down to the crooked house for some night pics.

Poor man’s night pictures, which mean no tripod.

Then it was time for bed!

I will say, as much as I didn’t love staying in a city with no air conditioning when Europe was having record breaking heat, being in Rothenberg after the day crowds left was amazing. It was so quiet and beautiful!

We had a full day in the city coming up!
