Day 5 – Alesund – Stairs for Daysss

Today we woke up as we were pulling into beautiful Alesund! Today was going to be a day full of laughter. You’ll see.

We were planning on climbing that little mountain (hill?) on the right. You may have seen them do the same thing on the Amazing Race last year!

We were going kayaking in the afternoon, so in the morning we planned to climb the Fjellstua Viewpoint which was 418 stairs. 418! We were getting so much exercise on this trip!

We needed food.

We met up with Dad and Mom and walked off the ship.

Such a cute little town!

We walked to the base of the stairs and started up!

These views were going to be so good!

We got ahead of Dad and Mom for a while. They’re down there!

One of the overlooks on the way up!

I stopped for a lot of pictures! Not breaks, pictures!

We made it!

They made it!

It was just beautiful! We sat for a little while and then made the much easier trip down.

Back in town!

We popped back on the ship for a free lunch!

Then it was time to kayak!

I decided it wasn’t wise to bring my camera, and stuck to my iphone for the rest of the day!

We walked to the kayaking place.

They tell you soooo many times what to do if you flip over, that it really makes you nervous that you will indeed flip over!

That’s a lot of kayaks!

When we got in ours, I felt the whole thing lean to the right when Stephen leaned over to get something on the dock. I may have yelled at him. We didn’t go over of course, but man I was worried!

We’re all in!

I think there were some comments at this point about how I better not drop my phone in the water. The irony was about to get soooooo rich.

I was really hoping we were going to head over to the ship for amazing ship pictures, but alas, we were going the other way!

After we’d been out for 10-15 minutes, I felt the kayak lean sharply to the right again. Then I heard a little splash…

I was just about to yell at Stephen again when it quickly righted.

And then he said those words I will never let him live down forget – “I think my phone went over”.

There are so many emojis I could use at this point.

I maintained a very respectful silence.

His phone was in his shirt pocket and worked its way out of said pocket as he rowed.

He was quiet for a minute and then said, “You married an idiot”.

At which point I couldn’t hold it in any longer.

And I laughed and I laughed.

And then I laughed some more.

My husband dropped his cell phone in a Norwegian Fjord.

We had just been told that the fjords were as deep as the cliffs next to them were high.

Oh my word I couldn’t stop laughing.

After he threatened to splash me with cold water from his oar, and I threatened his life if he did, we got back to rowing and enjoying ourselves.

But I still burst out laughing every few minutes.

Couldn’t help it.

When my parents caught up to us at one point, we told them what happened and I started laughing all over again. They weren’t sure if it was mean to laugh like I was, but Stephen was at least chuckling a little at that point, so we all (mostly) laughed.

Oh my word it was just too funny.

I decided not to temp the fates and didn’t pull out my phone again. See how smart I was?

We kayaked for another hour or so and then headed back.

It really was a great trip! An expensive one, Ha! But great.

I texted our children so they could laugh with me.

This is what Chase and Ally said. Stephen is not, by the way, in charge of finding aliens. At least that’s what he claims.

We changed for dinner next!

At dinner I (of course) told Stephen’s parents what had happened and they got go laugh with me. And laugh and laugh. Stephen’s dad can get a full belly laugh going, and when he saw how much I was laughing, he couldn’t stop either.

Poor Stephen.

Towel animal!

We sat on the verandah for a little while and I took a picture. With my phone. My perfectly dry working phone.

Then it was bedtime! Now that was a fun day!
