Day 1 – Living the Good Life

It was time! I flew out of Denver at 11:30 am which was a perfectly reasonable time!

Due to traffic, I ended up at the airport about 15 minutes later than I would have liked.

And then I had three very scary moments before boarding!

First scary moment – I parked offsite and was sitting on the shuttle when I looked at my flight email. Which said this –

Oh my word! My flight wasn’t tomorrow!! It was today! Did I book the wrong day? Surely not!! I checked the date on my phone about 12 times.

My heart was racing, while I searched for my actual confirmation. I was already trying to figure out what options I had if it was wrong, and who I should call! But phew!! It was today. Okay, heart, simmer down.

Second scary moment – I walked to the Air Canada check in, and there was a huge huge line, and one check in counter. Oh my.

I got in line and realized I may be able to go to the priority check-in due to my second flight being first class. First class!! You read that right, baby. More on that later.

The line behind me was long, and I was afraid to get out if I was wrong! But I was seriously worried about the time. Finally I asked the woman in front of me if she would mind if I got out and possibly got back in. She didn’t, so I crossed my fingers and went.

I could! Woohoo! And phew!

Third scary moment – Security took longer than normal, and they were boarding when I arrived. While waiting for my boarding zone, I heard one of the employees at the desk arguing loudly with someone.

She said, that’s your vaccination card, where is your covid test? Oh my word! I only had a vaccination card!

I had checked and double checked that I didn’t need one. And yet here they were turning multiple people away. Did I miss an update?

I got in the customer service line, then got out. I got in the boarding line and then got out of that too. All while scouring the internet with my heart racing in my ears. Finally I found it. Vaccination card! I was good! Then what on earth was happening?

Oh! They must be staying in Canada, not just going through on a layover. Or they weren’t from the U.S..

PHEW. Again!

Neither I, nor my blood pressure could take many more moments like that.

I boarded and found my seat, and relaxed for a 3 1/2 hour flight to Montreal!

A flight attendant in full safety gear passed out masks and wipes, which confused me. Was I supposed to change masks? I missed the English announcement! I watched people around me and decided I was okay, and put it away.

I watched A Quiet Place 2 (again), bought some internet, and got some work done.

We landed in Montreal and I made it through the customs maze fairly quickly.

I had an hour before my flight, so I went and sat! I didn’t quite have enough time to enjoy the first class lounge, but I figured I’d be getting a Coke Zero soon anyway! So that was okay!

Then I boarded for my FIRST CLASS FLIGHT!!

I have flown first class before, but never overseas. My word I was excited. Every time I fly to Europe, I vow never to fly economy to Europe again. Sleeping sitting up is just so miserable! And every time I go to book first class and see it’s four times the price – I say no no no.

Well about a week before I left, I was on the Air Canada site looking at my seats, when I noticed I could bid for an upgrade! I was only bidding on the one leg of the flight, so it may not be too bad? They had a minimum bid of $470, and I bid $500. I’m a big spender. Ha!

They said they would email me three days before if I got it. Four days before, I was on a bus doing a tour with several people when I glanced at my email and saw I got the upgrade!!

I actually yelled. Out loud. That we embarrassing.

But it worked, and here I was. Oh happy day!

I had my camera, but I was way too self conscious to get it out! Had to be cool. Act like I’d don’t this before. Conceal, don’t feel.

Sweet. Mercy.

It’s amazing.

An actual menu!

Look, I had socks!

How can I ever try to sleep in a regular seat again?

Here’s a quick video from Instagram (CruisingWithTammy).

After we left, I started a movie while I waited for dinner. I tried Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and I turned it off after five minutes. The language was stunning. Stunning!

So Godzilla vs Kong it was!

Eating streak, drinking Coke Zero, watching Godzilla vs Kong. Basically my perfect scenario.

Finished Kong! It was 10, so I decided it was fine to try and sleep!

I reclined my seat – ALL THE WAY, read for a little while, and went to sleep!

I slept okay! Not amazing, it was very warm, but I 100 percent know I slept better than I would have if I had been sitting up!

When I woke up, I had a message from Audrey. Her flight couldn’t land at NYC, and she missed her connection! Ack!

She was rerouting through Amsterdam in another attempt to make it.

We broke our own rule about flying in the day of the cruise. But this was such a last minute cruise that barely fit in our schedules. Neither of us would have made it work if we came in the day before. So we took a chance! Was I about to do a Greece cruise by myself?

They served breakfast after I woke up, and then I read for the last hour of the flight. Almost there!

Oh I also checked my return leg on Lufthansa to see if there was any way to upgrade. #spoilt

No options I could find! Back to economy for me!

But first – Greece!
